I became a member of the Buderim Billiards and Snooker club at the end of 2016 to support my son Josh in his desire to want to learn and play both snooker and billiards. Having never played both the games previous to joining myself, I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and excitement they both present. In my short time at the club, I have found all members to be extremely friendly, approachable and supportive, particularly in assisting Josh in developing his game. The club is always kept clean, the tables and equipment are well maintained and the fridge is always well stocked! There are multiple opportunities throughout the year for members to showcase their abilities by competing in the interclub competitions. For those players not quite up to the challenge, like myself, there is always someone about to engage in a social game. I would certainly recommend anyone looking to join the club, regardless of their capacity to play the game, to join.Jeremy Thrift,
I joined the club as an 11 year old in December 2016 having no experience in playing snooker nor billiards. My minimal knowledge of the game came as a result of watching great players on the internet and television. My father Jeremy and I were warmly welcomed into the club. Many members freely offered their guidance and advice regarding the technical aspects of the game and how to play and progress in the sport. Jeff Pickering and Mike Naray, the club’s junior coach, assisted me greatly in enabling me to grow and develop my game quickly.
After only 7 months playing, I competed in the Queensland State Titles in both Snooker and Billiards. My results saw me be selected as part of the Queensland team to compete the National Snooker and Billiards competition in Adelaide in January 2018. There I made it to the quarter-finals in the U/15 Snooker and finished third in my team’s event.
In interclub competitions during 2018, I was successful in winning both the B Grade and Intermediate Billiards competitions.
Without the assistance and support of the Buderim Snooker and Billiards Club, the committee, its coaches and its members, I would not have been able to achieve what I have in such a short period of time. I strongly recommend anyone interested in learning more about the sport, especially juniors, to join!Joshua Thrift,
