Buderim’s sharp snooker shooters target Queensland’s best

Buderim Snooker Club’s newly formed team is coping with life in the big league after joining the tough Brisbane District A-Grade Competition. The squad, which is led by local accountant Graham Baker, has improved throughout the tournament and has gained a strong following during home ties against the best cueists in the state.

On Monday (Mar 17) they took on Kedron-Wavell, a unit which includes a Queensland top ten player, in an I Spy Pies feature night and won two of the four contests. Paul Williams, who joined the club last year, showed off his skills with a 2-1 win, a result which was matched by Peter Warwick.

Baker and Peter Gilks were not as fortunate in their games, but the high quality exchanges were enjoyed by the spectators, who got to quiz the players after the match during a generous supper. “With one or two wins we could jump up a few spots on the ladder and we hope to do better in the second half of the season,” Baker said.

He currently holds the 12th biggest break in the competition after scoring 50 during the encounter with Twin Towns early in March. I Spy Pies feature nights will also be held at the club on April 21, when the powerful Brisbane team QMasters arrives, and on May 12, when the highly rated Redlands Tigers visit.

The club, which is part of the Buderim Community Hall, is also hosting free Come and Try Days with Coaching on April 5 and 6. Danik Lucas, a level two coach, will return after a successful weekend last year conducting the event, which is supported by the state government.
