The weekend kicked off with a high quality billiards exhibition between Danik Lucas, former Australian Champion, and David Armstrong, the clubs best billiards player. Danik made several quality breaks including a 108, thrilling the spectators with his control and creativity around the table.

There were also a series of snooker matches against local players Chris Shaw, John Wells and Tristan Claridge. Danik demonstrated his break building prowess including a great 52 clearance.

The main competitions were held on Saturday with Danik and 7 of the best local players from the club competing in a round-robin event followed by a knockout competition.

The round-robin event was the best of one frame, with only 6 reds to ensure each match progressed quickly. The competition was hard fought, with Tristan Claridge just edging out Danik Lucas to take the title. David Armstrong also performed very well, only missing out on frame count back.

Danik also took away the high break prize with a superb 61 break that was on track for a 74 total clearance, just short of the maximum possible for 6 reds which is 75. His opponent in that frame was James Haining, who only got one shot before Danik almost cleared the table.

There was $325 in prize money up for grabs with $175 for winning and $125 for runner up and a further $25 for the high break prize.

In the knockout event Danik overcame Sam Deering in the final to take the title and $100 prize money. Danik also won the high break prize with a well constructed 38.

All of the members, guests and visitors greatly enjoyed the weekend, with high quality play, food and drinks, a raffle and plenty to talk about. We all look forward to next time.

The Friday night (13 May 2011) will feature a billiards match against David Armstrong and snooker matches against several club members. Members, guests and visitors are welcome to attend this free event and finger food will be served for supper.

The next morning (Saturday 14 May 2011) Danik will play in a round-robin snooker competition with 7 other club players starting at 8am. Each match will be best of 3 frames with just 6 reds which should result in some exciting and close contests.

There will be prize money for the winner, runner up and for the highest break. Visitors are also welcome to come along and watch.

These series of competitions will follow a brief closure of the club to allow the tables to be recovered.

The club will be closed from 11 May until the competitions are played on the 13th and 14th of May. The club keeps the two full size snooker tables in top condition with the cloth changed on a regular basis to ensure all members can play at the top of their game.

The match was best of 3 frames with a reduced pack of 10 reds. The first frame went to Mark, the eventual winner, with some high quality play. The second frame was closer with Gavin getting over the line, but Mark clinched the final frame to secure a 2 – 1 win.

Andreas played very well to win 2 – 0 with his long pots a highlight of the match, while Michael was unlucky not to force a closer contest.

The match was one of three snooker competition finals played on the night, starting with the B grade and intermediate matches and culminating in the open final starting at 8pm.

Tristan was 2 frames to nil up in the best of 5 frame final, but Mike fought back with a superb 32 break and went on to take the third frame on the pink ball.

It appeared the match may go to a fifth and deciding frame midway through the fourth frame but Tristan was able to put together some useful breaks to take the frame and the match 3 – 1.

The Chadwick Shield is the clubs annual open snooker competition. It is a knockout competition with each round played over five frames.

John Wells edged out runner-up Brian Browser in the final to take the title. John played well in the final making the high break for the competition of 40 on his way to yet another title. The winner collected the first place prize of $125 worth of dinner vouchers, runner up received $75, two semi-finalists received $50 each, and the four loosing quarter-finalists received $25 each.

This is the first competition win for John at the club this year, following runner-up in the recent Kilcoy Sheild.

The round-robin stages of the competition were played on Saturday with 5 invited players from each grade competing. The winner and runner-up from the round-robin stage went through to the finals which were played on Sunday morning.

The semi-finals were played between John Wells and David Armstrong, and between Brian Browser and Jim Petersen. The finals were very close matches with 2 coming down to the final black, 2 being decided on the pink ball, and one match was even a draw with the black needing to be re-spotted.

The club also ran a sausage sizzle outside the club at Buderim Community Hall raising money for the operation of the club.

The next major fundraising event for the club will be a sausage sizzle outside Bunnings at Maroochydore on Friday 8th October.

B Grade and Int players will commence their round robin matches on Saturday morning and the A and A+ players in the afternoon. The top players from the round robin phase will playoff in the finals. During the finals handicaps will be used to make it fair for players of different grades.
